July project update

50,000 banksias planted!

Led by the crew at Natural Area Management, we have planted a lot of forage trees for our Carnabys! This included our first two school plantings, as well as the first stage of some exciting work with Winjan Aboriginal Corporation. Stay tuned for details!

Carnabys need 200-300 banksia cones per day for food, so this will make a real difference to the cockatoos in the Peel region. But much more is needed, so let's keep the community support for these birds strong!

At this stage, we are primarily after footage of flocks to track movements, and birds inspecting hollows to monitor pre-breeding activity. But all videos our feathered friends are welcome!

Bird Behaviour Bit

Carnabys are in their pre-breeding season at the moment. Unpaired birds are starting to pair up, and all birds are feeding up ahead of the migration to breeding grounds.

Here is a male (red eye-ring) and female having a pre-breeding season drink together.
